Academic year 2023-24

AIMS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT WYKHAM PARK

At Wykham Park we believe that the Physical Education Programme should be broad, balanced and provide for all individual needs, promoting a healthy lifestyle and lifelong involvement in being active.

Physical Education at Wykham Park aims to develop the whole person physically, mentally, emotionally, socially and aesthetically. We believe it should allow the opportunity to play, perform and evaluate theirs and others’ performance in a safe and enjoyable environment.

Our big drive in PE for this academic year is engagement and getting all students to find their passion for movement and activity. We strongly believe that positive experiences in the subject lead to a happy and healthier young person so we strive to deliver exciting lessons that create a spark for the subject in pupils.

You can keep up to date on all things Wykham Park PE through our social media page on X. Simply follow @aatbanburyPE for all the latest in fixtures, events and pupil achievement.

WHAT ARE WE STUDYING?

During the year, pupils will be given the opportunity to experience the following activities:

Football – Football is our most popular team sport at Wykham Park among both boys and girls. In this unit, pupils will focus on ball familiarisation and moving with the ball, passing and receiving, defending and defensive tactics, attacking principles of play, shooting and small-sided game play. We also offer a chance for competitive play through our inter college 6 a side competition and North Oxfordshire schools fixture list which take place after school and allow our pupils to get some friendly competition and put their learning into practice.

Fundamental Skills – This is a really fun unit we are introducing to our Year 7 curriculum offer. This is designed as the perfect transition into Year 7 and emphasises the key fundamental skills needed across a range of sports while our pupils are at Wykham Park. The unit focuses on the skills of running, jumping, throwing, balance, agility and co-ordination with the aim of providing a fun opportunity to develop these skills through game play.

Rugby – We have had much success in recent years with our school Rugby programme and it is a sport that instils and promotes the core values we hold dear. This unit of work focuses on evasive running, passing and receiving, tackling, attacking principles of play, rucking and mauling, kicking and small sided competitive game play. This year we have included variations on the sport to make it more inclusive to all our pupils. This includes Tag Rugby, Touch Rugby and Rugby X which is brilliant fun and enjoyed by all our pupils.

Netball – Netball is a fast paced and highly competitive sport at Wykham Park. This unit explores and develops the skills of ball handling, identifying space, movement, attacking principles of play, defensive principles, positional play and competitive game play.

Hockey – Hockey is a brilliantly inclusive sport that allows boys and girls to play and compete together. This unit will focus on dribbling, passing and receiving, tackling, attacking principles of play, defensive principles, identifying and exploiting space, shooting and small-sided competitive game play.

Basketball – Basketball requires real hand eye coordination and the skills learnt in this unit will transfer to a number of other sports. We have seen a big increase in popularity over the last 2 years and our extra curricular club allows pupils to put their learning from lessons in to more games focussed environment. At Wykham Park, our 4-week block will focus on dribbling, passing and receiving, shooting, defending, laws of the game and small-sided competitive game play.

OAA – The outdoor education unit involves plenty of opportunities for pupils to work together as a team in order to complete team and individual challenges. The focus for the unit is to provide challenges and opportunities for pupils to problem solve in real time and work towards a common goal. Map reading and navigational skills are also developed with these linking to the Duke of Edinburgh Award we offer at school.

Health Related Fitness – This a great unit for knowledge and understanding as well as providing an opportunity to take part in lots of fun and engaging activities. We link lots of the knowledge in this unit to our KS4 Sport Studies course so pupils can build up their knowledge and expertise. The HRF unit will focus on how to warm up correctly for activity, components of fitness and methods of training to improve different areas of fitness.

Badminton – Badminton is a fast-paced activity and one where our pupils develop and improve quickly. The Badminton unit at Wykham Park will focus on grip and court position, overhead and underhand clear, drop shots, the smash shot, serving, singles and doubles tactics and competitive match play.

Aesthetic Movements and Gymnastics – This unit builds on Fundamental Skills and provides opportunities for students to develop their balance, core strength and group movements. A lot of work in this unit will develop student’s ability to perform a range of movements with control and stability as well as group movements. This year we have managed to secure a large amount of funding for new equipment which makes this unit one of our most popular in school.

Rounders – Co-ordination and teamwork are at the heart of what we do at the beginning of the summer term. The Rounders unit will focus on the core skills of throwing, catching, bowling and striking as well as the  thinking skills around fielding roles and positions, tactics and competitive game play. We have an extensive extra curricular fixture programme in place for boys and girls with the opportunity to represent the school in the Summer term.

Cricket – The Cricket unit at will focus on the core skills of throwing, catching, bowling and batting as well as the thinking skills around fielding roles and positions, tactics and competitive game play. Student will get the opportunity to develop their skills in a number of formats including pairs cricket and quick cricket. We also have links to the Oxfordshire Cricket Club who come in to provide some external coaching during the Summer term.

Athletics – The Athletics unit at Wykham Park will cover a range of different events across multiple disciplines. The unit will focus on sprinting, pacing for middle and long distance, jumping (long jump and triple jump), javelin, relay and finish with competitive Olympic style competitions and of course Sports Day. We also provide extra curricular opportunities for students to compete against other schools with a pathway in place for those with a passion to continue their development outside of school.

Sport Education – In KS4 we aim to empower our pupils through our Sport Education units. During this time pupils are encouraged to develop their leadership and teamwork skills. Through a chosen sport pupils are encouraged to deliver their own warm ups, practices and competitive game play within their teams with the aim of gaining points throughout the unit for leadership, punctuality, kit, sportsmanship and fair play.

Other Sports – We are always looking for new and innovative sports for students to try and include a Sports Culture scheme of learning. During this unit students are able to experience sports from around the world to improve their cultural capital and find a passion for activity. These include Handball, Tchoukball, Parkour, Kabaddi, Ultimate Frisbee and Tennis.
